The push dagger is one of the oldest personal-defense blade patterns — a short blade set at a right angle to the handle so it lines up with your fist rather than your fingers. The grip sits in your palm with the blade projecting between your fingers, which is why the pattern has survived for well over a century: it's intuitive to hold and hard to drop.
The Hibben Vulcan Push Dagger is a modern take on that pattern from United Cutlery's Hibben Custom Design Series, drawn up by Gil Hibben — an American custom knifemaker and a member of the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame, best known as the designer behind some of the most recognizable knives in film. The Vulcan is the factory production version of a Hibben design: his shape and geometry, made affordably enough to actually own.
The blade is 5-5/8" of mirror-polished 5Cr13 stainless steel, full-tang, with an upswept edge, a beveled spine, and a fine penetrating point. The tang runs the full length of the piece and carries contoured black pakkawood handle scales, pinned through the beveled edge so the grip fills your palm. At 7" overall it's compact enough to carry and store easily, and it ships in a premium leather belt sheath with a snap-strap closure.
What it is
- A collectible Gil Hibben design. The Hibben Custom Design Series is a recognized name among knife collectors, and each blade carries the Hibben Knives markings. If you collect Hibben's work, the Vulcan is a distinctive, affordable piece.
- A compact personal-defense fixed blade. This is what a push dagger is designed for. The full-tang build and palm-filling grip are the point of the pattern.
- Carry-ready out of the box. The included leather belt sheath with a snap strap means it's ready to store and transport without buying anything extra.
Push daggers are restricted in some states and localities — please check your local and state laws before ordering.
